Getting Started
Obviously, once you decide that a career in real estate is for you, the next step is to become licensed. There are many Real Estate Schools available, from company sponsored schools to the New Castle County Board of REALTORS®
In the pre-licensing course you will learn about all forms of ownership, the Realtor Code of Ethics, and fair housing practices. You will also study the Delaware license laws. The pre-licensing course does not teach you how to sell real estate but prepares you to take the licensing examination which consists of about 120 questions. You must score 70% to pass. The licensing exam takes 2 to 3 hours to complete, and you will know immediately if you have passed or failed. If you do not pass, you can take the exam again after 24 hours. You must pass the exam and apply for your license within one year of completing the pre-licensing course. The cost of the state exam is $85.

Interviewing Tips
• Prepare a resume

• Never be late (10 minutes early is a good rule of thumb)

Remember...
You Never Get A Second Chance To Make A Good First Impression!
Some companies may ask you to fill out an application. Your resume will help with the information requested regarding past employers and references.
Some companies will require more than one interview. Ask about the process up front so you know what to expect.
During the initial interview, the following will be noted:
• High energy
• Past successes/professional track record
• Good communication skills
• Financial security
• Realistic expectations
• Ideas about prospecting
• Long and short term goals
• Strengths and weaknesses
Plan to spend 1 to 2 hours in the initial interview to make sure all of your questions have been answered. After this interview you may be notified that there is no opportunity available at that time. It is important that your time is not wasted if you do not meet the expectations of the company with which you are interviewing.
Good Questions To Ask
• Is the firm independently owned or part of a franchise?
• Can you describe the company philosophy?
• Does the company have a mission statement?
• What is the company's market strategy?
• Is the company actively involved in the community?
• What training is available, and is there a fee?
• Are agents full-time or part-time?
• Are there minimum standards?
• What type of facilities are available?
• What is the role of support staff in the offices?
• Do the managers sell?
• How accessible is management?
• What are my expenses?
• What does the company provide for me?
• What are the in-house services offered by the company?
• How am I compensated?
• What are typical earnings for a first year associate?
• Are the Manager / Owners licensed
• How long have the Manager / Owners been in the business of Real Estate
• How successful where the Manager / Owners when they were Agents.
A good pre-licensing school will provide you with a complete list of questions for a successful interview. A good interviewer will cover all these questions and more!
